Ulaanbaatar — The number of foreign nationals residing in Mongolia for official and private purposes has increased by 7.4% compared to the previous year, according to the latest official data.
As of December 31, 2025, a total of 34,272 foreign citizens from 136 countries were officially registered as residing in Mongolia for either official or personal reasons.
Breakdown by Nationality
Among registered foreign residents:
- 19,952 are citizens of China
- 3,001 are from Russia
- 2,278 are from India
- 1,693 are from South Korea
- 1,124 are from the United States
- 6,224 are citizens of other countries
Legal Framework and Population Share
Under Article 27.4 of Mongolia’s Law on the Legal Status of Foreign Citizens, the number of foreigners residing in the country for private purposes must not exceed 3% of Mongolia’s total population, with citizens of any single country limited to 1%.
Currently, foreign nationals residing for private purposes account for 0.9% of Mongolia’s total population. By nationality, this includes:
- Chinese citizens: 0.56%
- Russian citizens: 0.09%
- Indian citizens: 0.06%
- South Korean citizens: 0.04%
- U.S. citizens: 0.03%
