As Mongolia enters its harsh winter months, Ulaanbaatar Railways (UBTZ) has intensified efforts to ensure consistent coal deliveries to the country’s thermal power plants. This initiative is crucial for maintaining energy supplies to 1.6 million residents of Ulaanbaatar and other major cities such as Darkhan and Erdenet.

UBTZ’s “Ulaanbaatar” station currently transports 300-350 wagons daily, delivering between 15,000 and 25,000 tons of coal from the Baganuur and Shivee Ovoo mines to Thermal Power Plants No. 3 and 4. These power plants now hold 18-24 days’ reserves thanks to the railway’s strict coal transport schedule, implemented from November 5 to March 1.

“Today alone, we prepared and dispatched 267 wagons to load coal,” explained B. Udambuyan, head of the Ulaanbaatar Railway Station. He emphasized that UBTZ is committed to reliable coal transport to meet the city’s energy demands.

UBTZ has also achieved historic transport volumes, moving 32.4 million tons of cargo in 2023—a 1.5-fold increase over the past decade. October marked a new daily record, with 103.3 thousand tons of cargo transported.

The railway’s achievements were recognized during the “Transport Week” in Moscow, where Mongolia’s Minister of Roads and Transport, B. Delgersaikhan, held discussions with Oleg Belozerov, CEO of Russian Railways. The talks highlighted UBTZ’s pivotal role in advancing the Mongolia-Russia-China economic corridor, which saw an 8% increase in container transport volumes, reaching 336,000 TEUs this year.

Belozerov praised UBTZ’s professionalism, stating, “Their efficiency is instrumental in the success of our regional logistics partnerships.”
