Ulaanbaatar’s “Chinggis Khaan” International Airport is set to become the centerpiece of a major new development that includes an international standard transit airport facility and a surrounding satellite city. The plan is aimed at boosting Mongolia’s role as an air transportation hub in Asia.
According to city officials, the airport served about 45,000 transit passengers in 2025, underscoring growing demand for international connectivity. In response, authorities are preparing a public–private partnership project that would build a transit terminal adjacent to the existing airport, with direct access via a covered connector.
The transit facility is designed on a 3.3-hectare site and will include a multi-purpose building with retail, services, and office space, helping enhance passenger experience and encourage airline traffic growth. Officials say the expanded infrastructure could position Mongolia as a central node linking air routes across the region.
In addition to the transit airport construction, the broader development plan envisions a new “Hunnu” satellite citycovering hundreds of hectares. This zone would feature business clusters, free economic zones, event venues, data centers, and tech-oriented facilities, creating a diverse economic ecosystem around the air hub.
The initial phase also includes plans for 600–1,000 housing units and supporting social infrastructure such as schools and childcare centers, responding to the needs of the airport’s workforce, which already exceeds 2,000 employees.
