Prime Minister L. Oyun-Erdene has officially presented the Mongolian government’s draft resolutions for two critical projects, part of its 14 mega projects under the “Action Program of the Government of Mongolia for 2024-2028”, to Speaker of Parliament D. Amarbayasgalan. These projects aim to advance Mongolia’s economic, trade, and industrial collaboration with key international partners.
Key Resolutions Submitted
- Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmod Cross-Border Railway
The first draft resolution pertains to the agreement between the governments of Mongolia and China for the construction of the Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmod cross-border railway. This project holds strategic significance for Mongolia’s infrastructure development, as it will:- Enhance bilateral trade and economic ties with China.
- Boost regional cooperation and mineral exports.
- Increase the capacity of key trade ports—Shiveekhuren-Sehe, Hangi-Mandal, and Bichigt-Zuunkhatavch—by connecting them via railway, which is projected to raise throughput capacity by 80 million tons by 2030.
- Strategic Uranium Deposits Investment
The second resolution addresses the Zuuvch-Ovoo and Dulaan Uul uranium deposits, which are designated as strategic mineral deposits under Mongolia’s action program. This resolution aims to finalize an investment agreement between the Government of Mongolia and France’s Orano Mining SAS, as formalized through a Protocol of Negotiations signed in October 2023 during the Mongolian President’s visit to France. The agreement is expected to establish a joint Mongolian-French uranium project, fostering long-term collaboration in the mining sector and advancing sustainable resource utilization.
Strategic Vision for Mongolia’s Development
Both projects underscore the Mongolian government’s commitment to strengthening its economy through international partnerships and critical infrastructure development. The construction of the Gashuunsukhait railway is a cornerstone for expanding trade routes and ensuring regional integration, while the uranium investment agreement aligns with Mongolia’s push for value-added resource exports and energy independence.
The resolutions, once adopted, are anticipated to lay the groundwork for Mongolia’s broader efforts in economic diversification and sustainable development over the next four years.
