In a significant move toward modernizing its energy infrastructure, UBCTS TJSC has announced a tender worth 5 billion tugriks for the procurement of “smart meters” through the state electronic procurement system. This project aims to enhance the efficiency and reliability of the electricity distribution network in Mongolia.

A Step Toward Smart Energy Management

According to Ch. Batbayar, Head of the Metering and Measuring Instruments Department, the initiative involves a technical and technological upgrade of the current distribution system. The project, funded by UBCTS’s own resources, is part of a broader modernization effort spanning 2023-2027.

Key milestones for this year include:

  • Installation of 1,714 data collection devices (concentrators).
  • Deployment of 129,262 smart meters across two major districts:
    • 70,147 meters in Songinokhairkhan District, supported by 1,100 concentrators.
    • 59,115 meters in Bayanzurkh District, supported by 614 concentrators.

To date, 95% of the installation work has been completed, paving the way for further rollouts. The next phase, set for 2024, will see an additional 130,000 smart meters installed.

Benefits of Smart Meter Technology

The introduction of smart meters marks a transformative shift in Mongolia’s approach to energy distribution. These meters are designed to:

  • Monitor consumer usage in real time, providing detailed consumption data.
  • Enable remote power management, including cutting and restoring supply without manual intervention.
  • Balance energy loads, particularly during peak winter demand, to ensure stability.
  • Detect and prevent improper energy consumption.
  • Streamline operations by reducing fieldwork and enabling faster response to customer inquiries and service needs.
  • Enhance overall safety by promptly identifying and addressing electrical hazards.

Toward Improved Customer Satisfaction

This project aligns with UBCTS’s commitment to improving service quality and customer satisfaction. By leveraging smart meter technology, the company aims to provide faster, more efficient service while reducing operational costs and ensuring energy safety for consumers.

The ambitious initiative underscores Mongolia’s dedication to adopting advanced technology to support sustainable and efficient energy distribution systems. The smart meter rollout is expected to significantly contribute to the modernization of the country’s infrastructure and pave the way for future innovations in energy management.
