Regular direct flights connecting Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, are set to commence in December 2024. The announcement was made during the 19th Meeting of the Mongolia-Vietnam Intergovernmental Commission for Trade, Economic, Scientific, and Technical Cooperation, held in Hanoi from November 19 to 23.
The meeting was co-chaired by Mongolia’s Minister of Agriculture, Food, and Light Industry, Jadamba Enkhbayar, and Vietnam’s Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Hoan Le Minh.
Strengthening Connectivity and Economic Cooperation
Minister Enkhbayar highlighted that the introduction of direct flights would significantly enhance cultural and business exchanges between the two countries. The initiative follows the Mutual Visa Exemption Agreement signed in 2023, which has already facilitated easier travel and strengthened ties between Mongolia and Vietnam.
Environmental Collaboration
During the meeting, Vietnam pledged its support for Mongolia’s efforts to combat desertification and climate change as part of the Mongolian President’s “Billion Trees” National Movement. Both nations agreed to collaborate on researching tree species suitable for Mongolia’s unique environment, demonstrating a shared commitment to environmental sustainability.
Expanding Cultural and Tourism Ties
The two sides also agreed to work closely in areas such as culture, sports, and tourism to deepen mutual understanding and strengthen their partnership. Plans include organizing joint cultural events, preserving cultural heritage, and promoting tourism opportunities in both countries.
Advancing Bilateral Relations
The 19th Intergovernmental Commission Meeting reinforced the commitment of Mongolia and Vietnam to foster stronger cooperation across a range of sectors, including trade, agriculture, science, and technology. The new air route and collaborative initiatives reflect a growing partnership aimed at unlocking economic and cultural potential.
The launch of direct flights in December represents a milestone in Mongolia-Vietnam relations, creating new opportunities for connectivity, collaboration, and mutual development.
