In a historic milestone for Mongolia’s aviation industry, “Chinggis Khaan” International Airport welcomed its 2 millionth passenger today. This marks the first time in the country’s aviation history that such a significant number of passengers has been recorded in a single year.

The Passenger Behind the Milestone

The honor of being the 2 millionth passenger went to T. Gankhuleg, who traveled on the Beijing-Ulaanbaatar MIAT OM224 flight. Upon being recognized, Gankhuleg shared his surprise and joy:

“I am really happy to become the 2 millionth passenger of Chinggis Khaan Airport. I did not expect such a wonderful event to happen. This trip is particularly special for me as I faced difficulties with travel delays last year, but this year everything has aligned perfectly.”

A Record-Breaking Year for the Airport

The 2023 passenger record of 1.7 million was surpassed with the new milestone, a testament to the growing air traffic and robust infrastructure of the airport.

Since its opening in July 2019, Chinggis Khaan International Airport has significantly expanded its operations. Managed by the Mongolian-Japanese joint venture, New Ulaanbaatar International Airport LLC, the facility handles both domestic and international flights under a concession agreement with the Mongolian government.

Achievements and Future Plans

In 2024, the airport achieved a prestigious “4-Star Airport” rating from Skytrax, a global organization renowned for its evaluation of airlines and airports. This rating recognizes the airport’s high-quality services and world-class facilities.

Reflecting on this milestone, Kitanaka Takefumi, CEO of New Ulaanbaatar International Airport LLC, commented:

“When we opened three years ago, we faced immense challenges due to the pandemic. Today, celebrating our 2 millionth passenger is a testament to the dedication of our staff and partners. Moving forward, we are exploring opportunities in the Asian and Australian markets to expand our operations.”

Airport Operations at a Glance

Over the past three years, the airport has handled:

43,250 flights, both domestic and international

4,825,048 passengers

The milestone reflects not only the growing demand for air travel in Mongolia but also the airport’s capacity to manage and adapt to increasing passenger numbers. As it continues to explore new markets and enhance its services, Chinggis Khaan International Airport solidifies its role as a key gateway for Mongolian and international travelers.
